ACCOMPANIMENT FOR PARENTS
I have been a parent for almost 25 years this year.
I didn’t know when I got into the professional field of special education that I would also
have the experience of raising and accompanying neurodiverse children; three of them to be exact.
As I continue to develop and learn professional skills,
it is very common that a lot of that learning is happening parallel to my parenting experience.
So, when I share my recommendations as I accompany you, they are probably things that I have experimented with myself!
This doesn’t mean that I know better than you, it means that maybe I can save you some time and energy
and provide some guidance in making some connections between our similar experiences.
It has been a real journey in understanding, learning about the nuances of neurodiverse thinking
and how it impacts each individual differently.
Just when I thought I got it with one child, I realized that that wouldn’t work for another because they are completely unique. I have had to improve my communication and parenting in ways I never imagined. Through continual professinal and pedogogical experiences, reading many types of material and media, listening to various podcasts, speaking with a network of professionals, and following other people’s stories,
I have expanded myself in all areas of my life.
Personal growth is very important to me; I practise the things that I recommend.
And it is truly one of my greatest passions in life to be able to exchange ideas with others.
